Nat Parker was born into slavery but also born with the gift of reading. When his master's wife learns that he can read she teaches him. The only book she teaches them is the Bible. When years later Nat is a preacher, still a slave, but a preacher. Due to the awful drought that they are having the year some of the salves at the surrounding plantations are causing problems. The Reverend tells Nat's master that he might be able to make some money by bringing Nat to the other plantations to preach about "how salves should obey their masters". However, as Nat is going around to these other places he see how other's a being treated poorly. That's when he starts to preach differently and starts an uprising against the slave owners.
This is another great example of a story that we never learned in history class. There are so many of these stories in history, that help us with the facts, that we aren't learning about. Nate Parker was fantastic in this film. He really put everything he has into this role and I was very impressed.
